Mental Health Counselor

Importance of Role

Mental health and wellness are essential in supporting our clients and their families. We promote optimum mental, emotional, and social health and well-being. This position provides mental health counseling services, including psychosocial assessments, individual counseling, family counseling, group counseling, family systems support, and social competence training in person or via telehealth. The Mental Health Counselor will triage and support the initial application process of all mental health counseling clients, oversee all mental health counseling services, supervise counselors working toward licensure, and provide mental health consultation and support across programs within the Foundation.

Responsibilities – Direct Service

  • Conduct mental health counseling intakes and assessments.
  • Oversee sibling support groups, webinar series, and website initiative through the nationally recognized program Sam’s Sibs Stick Together.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with measurable objectives.
  • Lead individual or group therapy sessions.
  • Integrate parent training, parent involvement, counseling, and communication with families across screenings, assessments, and treatment programs.
  • Conduct preventative mental health and wellness classes, webinars, or workshops.

Responsibilities – Administrative and Supervisory

  • Supervise mental health counseling intakes, assessments and treatment delivered by licensed registered interns in the fields of mental health and/or social work.
  • Consult with team members across departments on evidence-based practices for autism as it relates to mental health and well-being.
  • Communicate and collaborate with outside providers to ensure consistency and continuity of care.
  • Comply with supervision and direct service requirements in accordance with treatment plans and insurance authorizations.
  • Participate in research projects involving mental health counseling.
  • Function as a content expert to support grant writing related to mental health counseling needs.


  • Work with a program team of 40+ professionals with a combined 130 years of experience.
  • Engage with families across the globe.
  • Participate on the Els for Autism transdisciplinary clinical team to ensure mental health counseling consultation and support are embedded across programs.

Qualifications and Experience


  • Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling or Social Work.
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ clinical experience as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Social Worker in the State of Florida and credentialed supervisor in the State of Florida.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Knowledge of typical development patterns as well as experience working with a variety of age groups across the life span.
  • Ability to collaborate with related professionals and providers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in time-management and prior experience with electronic medical records systems.


  • 2-3 years clinical experience with individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
  • Experience participating in research and presenting at local conferences or trainings.
  • Bilingual (e.g., English/Spanish, English/Brazilian Portuguese)
  • PCM trained.

Additional Requirements and Work Environment

Employment and Post Hire Training

  • Successfully complete two Level 2 Background Clearances; reference checks and Pre-employment onboarding.
  • Successfully complete Els for Autism Foundation New Staff Training Modules to include HIPAA Awareness and Medical Safety Trainings.


  • Adherence to a high level of professional and ethical standards in accordance with the governing licensure board.
  • Display a high standard of integrity and conduct while serving as a representative and ambassador for the Els for Autism Foundation, its mission, and the vision of the Els family.

Work Environment

  • Counseling services may be performed in a typical interior private counseling office environment, in the community, or outside during recreation-based activities.
  • Desk space may be in a shared office with other clinical professionals.
  • Ability to sit, kneel, stand, or bend as needed in support of clients’ needs.
