Ernie Els Launches Fifth Annual Els for Autism Golf Challenge

Organizing Sponsors SAP, Adams Golf, RBC and Wine Spectator support autism cause

Jupiter, Fla. (February 24th, 2015) – Els for Autism today announced that registration is now open for the fifth annual Els for Autism Golf Challenge; the largest international charity-driven amateur golf tournament in history. The Golf Challenge, spearheaded by four-time Major winner and World of Golf Hall of Fame member, Ernie Els, is an international, season long event series that takes place between May-October at over 20 of North America’s finest golf courses and culminates in a series finale in Las Vegas on November 13th and 14th.

Host venues for 2015 include a selection of first-class PGA TOUR stops and Major hosts including; Baltusrol Golf Club, NJ; Harbour Town Golf Links, SC; Congressional Country Club, DC; Hazeltine Golf Club, MN; TPC Boston, MA; and this year’s US Open venue, Chamber’s Bay.  This year Hawaii’s Hoakalei Country Club, an Els Design course, joins the impressive list of venues.  The 2015 series will kick-off with its first event on May 11th, at Trump National Doral Golf Club, Miami; hosted by last year’s top fundraiser, Sergio Leao.

In this event series, a team’s fundraising ability is valued as much as their performance on the golf course.  Teams compete in a combined low-net event for a selection of first class regional prizes and all teams that fundraise $13,000 or more will join Ernie Els and his celebrity friends from the PGA TOUR at the series Finale in Las Vegas in November, where major prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

Each team registers online at www.e4aGolf.com and is encouraged to choose an “Honorary Captain,” a child on the autism spectrum who they play and fundraise in honor of. Teams are assigned their own fundraising page and are able to email this out to friends, family and colleagues soliciting donations for their team. One team raising $2,500 or more in donations will be selected to receive a 7-day ultimate IRISH LINKS golf tour to Ireland in recognition of their fundraising efforts.

Non-golfers and those unable to play in a regional event are invited to participate in the fundraising drive by joining ‘The Gallery Club’.  Members can compete in teams of one or two to raise funds and awareness for Els for Autism and earn the chance to come to Las Vegas and participate in the Finale.

Els for Autism is excited and proud to announce that a family of highly-respected global brands are supporting Ernie in his philanthropic efforts through the 2015 Golf Challenge. Organizing Sponsors include Presenting Sponsor, SAP; Adams Golf, RBC and Wine Spectator.  The Challenge is also supported by an impressive team of Contributing Sponsors including: Boeing, ECCO, Hospitality America, IRISH LINKS, Maui Jim, Southwest Airlines, and The Honda Classic.

In 2015 the Foundation will continue to use golf to reach out to autism groups across the U.S. through the hosting of Ernie Els #GameON Autism® Golf Clinics alongside each of the regional Golf Challenge events. With support from The PGA of America Foundation (now called PGA Reach), The First Tee, The Honda Classic, Adams Golf and Southwest Airlines, this clinic series looks to build self-esteem and confidence in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment; encouraging participants to learn golf skills while practicing specific autism learning concepts. This year #GameON Autism clinics will also be expanded to include select Golf Challenge host courses in Canada.

Proceeds from the Challenge benefit Els for Autism in the U.S. and Canada. Proceeds from the Canadian events are donated to a variety of autism-focused, non-profit organizations in the territory or province in which they are raised. Proceeds from the U.S. events predominantly go towards the funding of a state-of-the-art autism center and hub of worldwide operations for Els for Autism; The Els Center of Excellence, although a portion of the funds raised on the day of each regional event is left behind in that city to fund sports and wellness programs for the local autism community.

The Els Center of Excellence will provide a uniquely designed on-site educational program for 300 children on the autism spectrum ages 3-21. It will also bring together the critical components of early intervention, transition to adulthood, medical and professional services, and adult services all on one campus. Committed to a global mission, the Center has been designed to facilitate a multi-faceted global outreach program focused on the sharing of best practices and programs with the global autism community and beyond.

The Groundbreaking for the Center took place in March 2014 and marked the start of construction of the Lower School and Center of Excellence Auditorium Building that will be at the heart of the global outreach programs. The school will welcome its first students this August. In the meantime, the capital campaign continues to ensure a continuous build schedule for the Upper School, the sports facilities, the medical and professional component and the adult services program.

“We are delighted to celebrate the fifth year of the Golf Challenge with our family of dedicated sponsors, players and donors. The Foundation has taken massive strides forward in the last year thanks to the support of some amazing companies and people who have taken this cause to heart; many of whom have connected to us through the Golf Challenge. It has been pretty amazing to witness the vision that Liezl and I had of creating a world-class Center start to take shape, and we are so excited to be welcoming our first students through the doors this August and taking our global outreach programs to the next level.”

Els added: “In addition, the Golf Challenge has already touched a lot of people through the #GameOn Autism Golf clinics. This is one initiative that is particularly close to my heart and plans are underway to launch the clinics in Canada this year and develop #GameON Autism Golf into a comprehensive program so that more individuals with autism can have access to golf worldwide.”

Since its inaugural 2011 series, the Els for Autism Golf Challenge has grown year on year and has raised a total of over $9 million for autism thanks to over 7,500 rounds of golf and over 17,500 donors pledging funds. The series has also helped raise awareness of a disorder that that now affects a staggering 1 in 68 children, and 1 in 42 boys.

The Els Center of Excellence to Welcome First Students This August

First components of state-of-the-art autism center on track for completion this summer

Jupiter, Fla. (February 24th, 2015) – Els for Autism today confirmed that The Els Center of Excellence, a state-of-the-art autism center being built in the heart of the Limestone Creek area of Jupiter, FL, will welcome its first students in August this year when it opens the first components of the Center – The Lower School and The Els Center of Excellence Auditorium Building.

Groundbreaking took place for the Lower School and Auditorium Building in March 2014. These are the first components that are being delivered of a 26-acre campus that, once complete, will include an Upper School, extensive sports and outdoor recreational facilities (including a gymnasium, swimming pool, golf practice facilities, athletics field, and play courts), a cafeteria, a medical and professional services building and an adult services component.

Once the full vision for the Center is complete, the Center will host a uniquely designed, on-site educational program for a total of 300 children, ages 3-21, on the autism spectrum and bring together the critical elements of early intervention, education, applied research, transition to adulthood, medical and professional services, and adult services all on one campus. Having all the essential elements on one campus, with the integrated programing and continuity of service that this allows, will not only be a tremendous resource for the children in the local area of Palm Beach County, but positions the Center as a game-changing resource for autism. It will be a perfect hub for spearheading a multi-faceted global outreach program that will make best practices in education and therapy available to children, families and autism experts both across the U.S. and internationally.

The Lower School will provide public charter school education for 150 children from ages 3-14, and, in-line with with the entire campus, has been specifically designed to create a learning environment that is suited to children on the spectrum. This includes features that will support easy navigation such as visual cues and sensory walls; special LED lighting to mitigate behavioral issues that can be triggered by standard fluorescents; specially designed learning labs for life-kills and vocational training; and a sensory integration room to foster sensory and motor development. Through the use of interactive cameras and observation rooms the Lower School will also provide an invaluable resource for applied research studies, allowing resident experts, visiting scholars and researchers to examine issues and develop practical approaches to the wide range of challenges that individuals on the spectrum face.

The delivery of the state-of-the-art Auditorium Building, specifically designed to help facilitate the dissemination and gathering of applied research findings and best practices, will enable the Foundation to take its global outreach activities to the next level. The building includes a 300-seat auditorium equipped with video-conferencing technology, a green-room, 3 smaller video-conferencing suites and additional office space to house the Els for Autism Foundation staff, programming staff, visiting scholars and researchers.

Els for Autism Founder, Ernie Els, said: “Thanks to the generous support of a huge number of organizations and individuals, the first components of the Center are now close to completion and we cannot wait to welcome the first kids through the doors this August and to take our global outreach activities to the next level. It really is like a dream coming true for myself and Liezl.”

He added:  “From the beginning, our vision for the Center was to create a game-changing resource for both the local and global autism community, with all the necessary services integrated on one campus. While great strides have been made, we still have a long way to go and we are now focused on raising the necessary funds to deliver the rest of our vision. We are asking people to stay with us on our journey as we continue to build a better future for people with autism.”

With the Lower School and Auditorium close to completion, Els for Autism’s capital fundraising campaign is focused on ensuring a continuous build schedule for the Upper School, the sports facilities, the medical and professional services building and the adult services component.

Donations can be made online at www.elsforautism.com and by check (made payable to ‘Els for Autism’) and addressed to: Els for Autism, 3900 Military Trail, Suite 200, Jupiter, FL 33458.

Els for Autism Els Center of Excellence Foundation on Schedule

Foundation Pour Occurs on June 4, 2014

Jupiter, Fla. (June 6, 2014) – The Els for Autism Foundation construction plan is right on schedule for The Els Center of Excellence in Jupiter, Florida as evidenced this week by a brief ceremony to mark the concrete pour for the Lower School’s building foundation.  The Center, which will be built on 26 acres in the heart of the Limestone Creek area of Jupiter, will be a world-class facility and a leading example of what should be available to people with autism spectrum disorders across the world.

The Ceremony to mark the pouring of the foundation for the Lower School and Center of Excellence Auditorium buildings was attended by the Foundation staff, Gerrits Construction, Mr. Els’ parents Hettie and Neels, and Liezl and Ernie Els.   Each person was able to place coins into the fresh concrete which came from multiple countries, like South Africa, the Els’ native country, Ireland, England, Switzerland, Brazil, Italy, Dubai and multiple states.  Many of the coins, placed to wish the Center of Excellence well, held special meaning including celebrations of significant dates or excellence.

The Center will integrate unique architectural components to create a learning environment specifically designed for children on the spectrum, and will include the technology, space and design components that will enable the Center to connect the international autism community with best practices and the latest information and research.

Once completed, the Center will provide a uniquely designed on-site educational program for 300 children on the autism spectrum ages 3-21. It will also bring together the critical components of early intervention, transition to adulthood, medical and professional services, and adult services all on one campus. At its heart will be a multi-faceted global outreach program that will make best practices in education and therapy available to children, families and autism experts both in the U.S. and internationally.

In the meantime, the capital campaign continues to ensure a continuous build schedule for the Upper School, the sports facilities, the medical and professional component and the adult services program.

“It was a wonderful day to celebrate the Center not only for me, but also for Liezl and our families as we see our dream of creating a world-class Center, focused on improving the lives of those impacted by autism, come even closer to a reality.” Commented Els for Autism Founder, Ernie Els.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans Teams Up With Ernie Els to Turn Golf Blue This Week in Support of Autism Awareness

Zurich Classic teams up with Ernie Els’ Foundation, Els for Autism, to turn golf blue this week to raise awareness and show support to those affected by autism.

Jupiter, Fla. (April 22, 2014)  The Zurich Classic has stepped up to support Els for Autism this April to recognize Autism Awareness Month at the PGA TOUR stop at TPC Louisiana, LA; April 21-27. Tournament organizers as well as Els’ sponsors have teamed up with Els for Autism on a number of initiatives to help drive awareness of a disorder that now affects 1 in 68 children in the U.S. and 1 in 42 boys as well as show support to the estimated two million individuals affected by autism and their families.

The Zurich Classic has designated Saturday, April 26, as the tournament’s Autism Awareness Day or ‘Blue Out Day’. PGA TOUR Professionals, caddies, spectators and media will all be asked to wear blue on Saturday and join World of Golf Hall of Famer and four-time Major Champion, Ernie Els in showing support for those affected by autism spectrum disorder.

Blue and white autism awareness ribbon pins will be available to players and caddies at the 1st tee on Saturday. Pins will also be available to members of the media via the tournament’s Media Center from Thursday and the first 250 fans though the gates on Saturday will also receive their own autism awareness pin. In 2013 the winner of the Zurich Classic, Billy Horschel, was wearing the blue and white autism awareness ribbon when he raised the trophy on the Sunday!

As part of the partnership, Els for Autism, the Zurich Classic and The First Tee will be hosting a #GameON Autism Golf Clinic for children on the spectrum from two local schools; St Michael Special School and the Chartwell Center. The clinic will be held at the Zurich Golf Academy at TPC Louisiana at 3.30pm on Tuesday April 22. Els for Autism ambassador, Ernie Els, is hoping to be in attendance at this clinic. Made possible through a partnership with The PGA of America Foundation, The First Tee, The Honda Classic, Adams Golf and Southwest Airlines, these clinics are especially tailored for individuals on the spectrum and use golf as a medium to develop life skills, encourage social interaction and promote healthy living.

Spectators can also keep a look out for Ernie’s custom blue April autism awareness kit. Els’ signature lion headcover has been turned blue for the month of April, Ernie’s sponsor I-ONICS has produced a special blue charity wrist-band and long-term sponsor SAP will be giving up their spot on the front of Ernie’s hat to Els for Autism this Saturday. The SAP logo will be temporarily replaced by the Els for Autism Awareness Puzzle Piece Ribbon; embroidered onto the front of the hat. Els for Autism will be giving away some of Ernie’s blue kit via its Twitter page – @ElsForAutism.  In the meantime, fans can find out how to secure their own Els for Autism blue and white puzzle autism awareness ribbon pin, the I-ONICS charity wristband, as well as a very limited supply of the custom blue lion headcovers, by visiting: www.elsforautism.com/GoBlue.

“A huge thank you to our friends at the Zurich Classic for getting on board again this year and helping us to promote autism awareness and show support to the millions of individuals affected. Not only will we be turning golf blue on Saturday but we have teamed up with the Zurich Golf Academy to host a #GameON Autism Golf Clinic for local kids on the spectrum on Tuesday before the tournament starts.” Said Els for Autism Founder, Ernie Els.

He added: “As many of you will know the prevalence stats have very recently gone from 1 in 88 children affected in the U.S. to 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys. With this kind of figure in play autism cannot be ignored – everyone needs to sit up and take notice. One of the key things we are doing this month, with the help of Zurich, RBC, the Heritage Foundation, Boeing, SAP, Breitling, Adams and my other sponsors, is using golf as a platform to promote not only awareness but the importance of early detection. The earlier we can diagnose our kids and secure the help that they need, the better chance they have of leading productive and rewarding lives. So please join with us this week to show support and help spread awareness.”

“Zurich is proud to continue our support of the Blue Out and Autism Awareness Month,” said Randall Clouser, Head of Marketing, Distribution and Regional Management for Zurich North America. “Both Zurich and Ernie are passionate about golf. This is a unique opportunity to use the game we love to help children on the autism spectrum build self-esteem and confidence.”

Throughout the month of April, Els for Autism will raise awareness and educate fans and supporters via its social media outlets by sharing educational facts about autism, promoting how the PGA TOUR and our sponsors are turning golf blue, and conducting special giveaways.

  • In 2013, South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley, proclaimed Friday, April 19, 2013 “Els Autism Awareness Day.”
  • This year’s Autism Awareness month follows the recent release of new prevalence statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that estimates 1 in 68 children in the U.S. and 1 in 42 boys has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 children two years ago.

2014 Els for Autism Pro-Am Raises $745,000

Great support from Tour Pros, amateurs, donors and sponsors, helps deliver another wonderful fundraising result for Els for Autism.

Jupiter, Fla. (March 10th, 2014) – Monday 10 March 2014 will be recorded as a landmark date in the chronicles of the Els for Autism Foundation. First Ernie and Liezl led a groundbreaking ceremony on site for The Els Center of Excellence, which was followed straight afterwards by the sixth Els for Autism Pro Am, in association with Wine Spectator and Cigar Aficionado.

This year’s Pro Am raised $745,000, which brings the total in the six-year history of this event to almost $4 million.

The event was televised in the US on Golf Channel, fronted by Tim Rosaforte, which was in itself a huge boost in terms of creating more awareness for Autism and, of course, the Els for Autism Foundation. “Big thanks to Tim and all the guys at the Golf Channel,” tweeted Ernie through his official account @TheBig_Easy.

PGA National’s famous Champion Course was again the venue for this always well-supported annual event, which this year was blessed with perhaps the strongest ever line-up of Tour Pros, featuring no less than seven major champions. The complete field included: Thomas Aiken, Greg Chalmers, Graham DeLaet, James Driscoll, Rickie Fowler, Branden Grace, Justin Hicks, Thongchai Jaidee, Martin Kaymer, Justin Leonard, Matteo Manassero, Steve Marino, Will McGirt, Louis Oosthuizen, Pat Perez, Nick Price, Charl Schwartzel, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Kevin Streelman, Michael Thompson and Michelle Wie.

The focus at the annual Els for Autism Pro Am is primarily on having fun while fundraising, both of which were present in abundance, but there was also a competition to play for. This year it was won by the high-profile group of ex-Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani, talk show host Rush Limbaugh, publisher and Els for Autism Board Member Marvin Shanken, alongside LPGA Tour Pro Michelle Wie. “Despite no warm-up, she was just tearing it up – I mean, sweet-spot flushing it on every shot,” commented a very impressed Limbaugh on his website.

“Every year Liezl and I are overwhelmed by the generosity and the level of support given to this very worthy cause,” said Ernie. “We want to thank our sponsors, partners, amateur competitors and, of course, PGA National, the most generous of hosts and a magnificent partner to the Els for Autism Foundation these past six years.”

“Not least, we also send our special thanks to my fellow Tour Pros who gave up their time, many of them having travelled straight from an extremely demanding week playing in the WGC – Cadillac at Doral. Guys, it really means a lot to us. We couldn’t do this without you.”

Els For Autism Breaks Ground with the Els Center of Excellence

Jupiter, Fla. (March 10th, 2014) – The Els for Autism Foundation is today hosting a Groundbreaking Ceremony to mark the start of construction of the The Els Center of Excellence in Jupiter, Florida. The Center, which will be built on 26 acres in the heart of the Limestone Creek area of Jupiter, will be a world-class facility and a leading example of what should be available to people with autism spectrum disorders across the world.

The Center will integrate unique architectural components to create a learning environment specifically designed for children on the spectrum, and will include the technology, space and design components that will enable the Center to connect the international autism community with best practices and the latest information and research.

The Ceremony marks the start of construction of the Lower School and Center of Excellence Auditorium building that will be at the heart of the global outreach programs. The goal is to have these in operation by mid 2015. In the meantime, the capital campaign continues to ensure a continuous build schedule for the Upper School, the sports facilities, the medical and professional component and the adult services program.

“This is an incredibly exciting day not only for me, but also for Liezl and our children as we watch our dream of creating a world-class Center, focused on improving the lives of those impacted by autism, start to become a reality.” Commented Els for Autism Founder, Ernie Els.

He added: “We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last five years; we have only been able to reach this exciting milestone thanks to the generous and collective support of our friends and donors. Please do stay with us on our journey as we continue to raise funds to complete this unique facility that will focus on helping individuals on the autism spectrum, locally, nationally and internationally, fulfill their potential to lead positive, productive and rewarding lives.”

The Els Center of Excellence has been designed by architectural firm Peacock + Lewis who has worked with Els for Autism since the Center’s initial conception. Gerrits Construction, a seventy-year-old, third generation family-owned firm, has recently been selected to be the lead construction contractor for the Center. Based out of Boca Raton, Florida, Gerrits has substantial, local and international experience in the construction of healthcare, educational, and commercial facilities.

Construction on the Els Center of Excellence Tees Off!

Jupiter, Fla. (March 10th, 2014) – Ernie and Liezl Els today hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony to mark the start of construction of the The Els Center of Excellence in Jupiter, Florida. The Center, which will be built on 26 acres in the heart of the Limestone Creek area of Jupiter, will be a world-class facility and a leading example of what should be available to people with autism spectrum disorders across the world.

“Thank you Ernie Els for building us this Center so we can reach for the stars,” said 17-year old Spencer Schmidt, who delivered a brilliant and upbeat address on behalf of all of the students at the Renaissance Learning Academy and Center, the two schools that will combine to become The Els Center of Excellence. “As they say in South Africa, ‘Danke!’ Let’s get this show on the road!”

Ernie Els and his wife Liezl, Founders of the Els for Autism Foundation, both spoke movingly about what this project means to them and indeed the extent of its potential impact on the wider autism community.

“This is an incredibly exciting day not only for me, but also for Liezl and our children as we watch our dream of creating a world-class Center, focused on improving the lives of those impacted by autism, start to become a reality,” said Ernie. “Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen; in particular, we wouldn’t be here without the help and support of the local community. This is a proud moment. We want to build and get the Center up and running as quickly as possible.”

Ernie also praised his wife Liezl as the “driving force” behind the project. Liezl herself added: “I can’t believe our vision is finally becoming a reality. It’s going to be amazing! In particular I want to thank Commissioner Hal Valeche and his team for their support as well as Patrick Rooney and the Autism Project of Palm Beach County for getting things started.”

Building on what her husband and Co-founder had said about the local community, Liezl explained how touched she had been personally by “the way in which the local community have welcomed us and our kids.” Liezl then added: “The welcome we have had is so encouraging and gives us so much hope for the future for the acceptance and inclusion of our children in society.”

Among the honored guests at the Ceremony was Todd Mullins, Lead Pastor of Christ Fellowship who opened the proceedings with a blessing. “We pray for the children that will be impacted by the Center and whose lives will be forever changed by it,” said Mullins.

Pat Murphy, local sportscaster and Master of Ceremonies for the Groundbreaking Ceremony then welcomed Hal Valeche, Palm Beach County Commissioner, Representative Patrick Rooney Jr., a Member of the Florida House of Representatives, as well as neighbourhood friends, donors and friends of Els for Autism.

Hal Valeche was the first special guest to speak and described how personally attached he had become to the project over the years: “This project is very dear to me, it started at the very beginning of my term and its wonderful to see it now come to fruition,” he said. “The Center is going to bring so much benefit to the local area. The economic benefits of having the Center here are high; it’s going to transform the community. In addition, it will give the Limestone Creek area tremendous international exposure as people from around the world visit the Center to further the understanding and treatment of autism.”

Representative Patrick Rooney Jr. a Director of the Autism Project of Palm Beach County, also addressed the Ceremony guests and in a heartfelt speech explained: “This Center is very personal to me. My son Patrick has autism and I can’t tell you how much this means to me.”

To bring the Ceremony to a close, Ernie hit a ceremonial tee shot into the land that is set to be the home of the new Els Center of Excellence, before he was joined by Liezl and the other dignitaries to officially ‘break ground.’ Blue shovels, the color associated with the cause of autism, were used for the occasion.

Also, mason jar planters specially created by the students from both the Renaissance Learning Center and Academy were given out to guests at the end of the ceremony. Filled with earth from the land, and a mint plant, and each etched with the name and date of the event, the small planters were a fitting and symbolic way for the students to get their message across: “Thank you for helping us grow.”
