Teaching Students with ASD to Ride a 2-Wheeled Bike

Presented by: Jennifer Bodiguel, Occupational Therapist; New Heights School and Learning Services
When: Tuesday, July 17th, 2018
Time: 12pm – 1pm (EST)
Abstract:  Learning to ride a bike is a milestone in many children’s lives. Unfortunately, due to coordination challenges, anxiety, and/or difficulty with emotional regulation, it can be hard for students with autism to master this skill. For the past 5 years, New Heights School has worked with their students, age 6-21 who are unable to ride a 2-wheeled bike without training wheels. Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, the students’ progress from walking beside their bike, to walking while sitting on their bike with the pedals removed, to adding pedals and learning to safely steer and brake. With a success rate of over 90%, we are excited to be able to share our process with others.
